Have you tried making your own face mask?
Recipes can be found everywhere online and since most ingredients are natural, i have heard great reviews of them from those with even the most sensitive skin.

Whilst longtime readers will know i am a really big fan of washoff masks, i am also extremely lazy. Which is the reason why i have never tried making them myself.

But after hearing raving reviews of the masks below…i crumbled and decided to give them a try

Face Wash powders
From left : MungBean [Green bean] , Coix Seeds

Mung bean face wash powder
I’ve only started using this one so i’ll have to review the other one in another post.

But this facewash powder doesnt just contain green bean powder
powder04
Contents: MungBean Powder, Coix Seeds Powder
So its semi premixed i guess?

The other coix seeds face mask powder contains a higher percentage of coix seeds powder and some other stuff, will review in another post.

powder07
Directions: Add distilled water to make a paste, can be used as a facewash, face mask and bath soak.
Also makes a good scrub to remove dead skin cells. Can also be mixed with honey or milk to make a mask.

Pros:
- very cheap. About USD$3 for the entire bottle.
- all natural, i assume its generally ok even for sensitive skin
- Can be used daily

Cons
- really smells like green beans XD
- messy. its powder afterall?

EDIT:
if you want to buy it too, i asked miss Sizbelle who told me sasa.com sells it and the brand name is kuan yuan lian. sasa.com ships internationally ^^

I have used it about 5 times so far and my skin really feels smooth after usage. I have tried it both as a facewash and a face mask. Its very gentle yet cleans out my pores well but does not remove the more stubborn blackheads T-T <– might have to keep on using it to find out. Will keep you guys posted.

You can learn more about these masks from the maker’s website [From Taiwan] : http://cucumber.com.tw/

For those of you who think its a little messy and troublesome, there are single packaged powder masks such as the green tea mask from SkinFood [green cup below]. And there is always those VOV washoff masks [NOT powder form!]

Remember how i mentioned i went to the flower market in Victoria Park Causeway Bay last week?
I dont really have photos to share as it was crazy crowded but luckily the husband took a few photos.

The Crowd

In other news, how was everyone’s lunar new year or valentine day’s weekend?
The weather in hong kong took yet another sharp turn and became oddly cold and rainy over the weekend.
Alas for me, i got caught in the rain on Saturday and my cold took another turn for the worse as well [i was already much better but now i am worse than i was before]

I might have to venture to a doctor tomorrow. My immune system is just not adjusting to Hong Kong T-T

Hope you are all doing much better than me
XOXO

  3. mayaari says:

those powders sound promising! I think I have the single-use packs in a recent order from sasa that should be arriving soon, haha.

  4. mariam says:

    vov mask! love it!

  5. Stephanie says:

O_> I’ve also been doing DIY skin care! Oatmeal, yogurt, manuka honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, cucumber juice, etc. for my acne prone skin. The mung bean/coix seeds sound good too! I might grind up some mung beans and try it.

  6. Jian says:

Hi Yumeko! Thanks for the review of the masks! I’m really lazy too..I don’t think I can ever be bothered to make my own. I made an aspirin mask twice, and both times was just because I wanted to bash aspirin tablets in a pestle and mortar (I thought it was quite fun, stress relief!).

I’m sorry to hear your immune system isn’t coping with HK! I hope you have health insurance? I think my friend says the healthcare isn’t free in HK, plus to see an international doctor is expensive!! >< Drink plenty of fluids and keep warm! I heard it was really hot actually, apart from that obviously cold and wet weekend! O_O

I ate way too much over the lunar festival weekend. I hope you enjoyed yours too~ =)

  7. adin says:

  8. Miumiu says:

Is Cold FX available in HK? I hear good reviews on how it boosts your immume system.
I love those Skinfood masks in a cup! Have you tried all the “flavours” yet?

  9. VanityMakeup says:

The masks look good! There’s not really any miracle ones here in aus.

The weather here has been super hot one day, then raining the next. D:

  10. Olive says:

  18. Fiona says:

I’ve seen that mask in reviews everywhere! Just can’t find it in Singapore :( It sounds so cheap and good!

    do take care!!get well soon!XD

  20. rene says:

I’m sorry to hear that your body is not getting use to HK! Hong Kong’s pollution is quite bad too isn’t it? Is your skin suffering from all that so far?
    Get well soon!!

  21. wuzzyangel says:

Aww Yume! I was so hoping your body would be acclimated by now! :( Do feel better love! I don’t like thinking of you being all sicky! Especially if the weather has been crappy too! :( Rest up and drink lots of hot liquids! :)

I’ve never made my own masks before but I rarely use them anyway. I actually ordered a lot online recently but I haven’t used any yet because I find them so tedious and I’m so lazy. Yes, I know I need to get off my arse!

  24. How is the consistency of the powder if you use it as the face mask?that look really interesting, where did you get them from?? i like paste or clay-kind of mask, in my opinion they are much effective than the sheet mask :p

  25. Oct says:

    feel better soon, Yumeko! ;D

i’ve also heard great things re mung beans. i also read a post somewhere that used yogurt drinks. too bad i can’t find the mung bean powder here too easily.

    • Bittenbefore says:

yogurt drinks! thats interesting! hope u can find some mung bean powder or maybe grind it urself

  26. Nat says:

I’ve made my own masks before and it turned out to be such a hassle haha. So I prefer masks in a tube LOL.

I hope you get better soon!!

  27. jewels says:

must be so exciting to be in HK for chinese new years. I never been in HK for any festivals b4. but then i get overly annoyed sometimes when i’m in a city/country full of chinese ppl lol (even tho i’m chinese)

Happy Chinese New Year Yumeko! I guess I should wish you good health in the new year. I just got back from Beijing to find HK hit it’s coldest this winter yesterday. It’s gonna be cold till mid next week apparently, so take care! I love this face wash powder/ mask as a scrub! certainly one of the cheapest scrubs i bought and works like a gem.

    • Bittenbefore says:

thanks! hope u had a good holiday in beijing

i am sad that the weather wont be staying cold longer , i dont like humid weather haha

  30. Justine says:

    It’s weird that I find myself LOVING sheet masks and being too lazy for wash-off masks… maybe because I don’t keep the wash off masks in the bathroom!! The bean masks sounds super interesting but do not appeal to my sense of laziness right now… haha XD;

It’s lucky that the husband is taller than that crowd!! The market looks INSANELY busy!!

I hope you feel better soon! And that you are enjoying the cold[er] HK weather :D !

  31. erin says:

that crowd is crazy?we went on thursday when you could still walk leisurely. am back in tw by the way. hope you’re recovering :)

    • Bittenbefore says:

hope u are doing well back home and not ill anymore!
unfortauntely i am still sick XD sad right? aigoo its hard when one is old like me hahahahaha

  32. shaynaJo says:

hi dear, i’m using a facial soap cleanser which is made from Mung Bean too. So far so good and I think it stabilized my skin condition alot! It’s really cheap and organic. Loving it..
I might wanna give this a try too =)

  33. Golden says:

Wow! That’s an interesting product. I really didn’t know you can use bean powder as facial mask.

    Lots of love,

  34. jac says:

    Hi hi
how do you prevent lumps from being formed when you do the mixing? By the way, does ur blog has a “send response to my mailbox” option? Tkz

    • Bittenbefore says:

i recently changed my comment form so all replies will go to your mailbox if u filled in an email address ^^

as for lumps..i get plenty of lumps so i dont think it matters? i just mix it randomly in my hand and put it on my face. i dont use a bowl or anything heee

  35. Tammy says:

I am way too LAZY to make my own mask..lol
I have one that I use in the summer, but that’s on a rare occassion..

  36. aichaku says:

i bought some made-in-taiwan powder-in-packs with similar green bean and mung bean ingredients, which can be used as scrub or mask too. i find them great, but haven’t been able to find those again – thanks for the review on this new product it sounds like a great alternative to the one i’m using. btw, plse ignore my email? i found the dekoden link! :D

  37. May says:

I have both of the kuan yuan lian power masks too. I’ve used the green bean power once but, didn’t like the grassy bean smell. I will try to use it again soon. As I’m too lazy to make my diy masks too. VOV wash off masks are so much more convenient to use:)
