Atami Station Shopping Street 熱海駅前平和通り商店街

A while ago, on our way back from a roadtrip to Ito, my family and i stopped in Atami (熱海市) for a quick look.
It is a city located in the eastern end of Shizuoka, Japan and is famous for its onsens as well. It is part of the 三景 Sankei and known as one of Japan’s Three Great Hot Springs (三大温泉 Sandaionsen).
Note: This is a list made in the 17th century. There have been tons of new lists/variations since.

We were there to visit the Atami Station Shopping Street 熱海駅前平和通り商店街
It is right next to the Atami Train Station.

atami01
its not the longest street but an extremely popular destination esp for those taking the train.

Its usually CRAZY busy on weekends [i was there on monday hence it was fairly deserted!]
atamii01

Many people visit here to have a meal prior to taking the train [or after arrival] at Atami Station
atami06
Its also the place to get your omiyage [souvenirs] <– big practice in Japan..usually its food XD

Check this out XD
atamii04
Beer cups made of dried squid [ika]
My assumption is you would eat the cup as you drink the beer..or is it after? But dont you need to heat it up..else it would be like chewing leather?
I dont really know the logistics of consuming this..what do you think?

There are a few restaurants in this street [and adjoining areas] but do try the snacks as well!
atamii05
まる天 [Maruten]

This store sells fried fishcakes made with locally caught fish. They have been on TV quite a few times. [TBS?]
atamii06
Their website: www.marutenn.co.jp/

And everywhere you go in this street, you will see 温泉饅頭 [onsen manju]
Manju or steamed dessert buns which are steamed using onsen waters. Usually the onsen spring water is used in the dough production too.
Very popular souvenirs.
atamii13
Almost 80% of the stores are selling their versions of these.

Many are sold in prepacked boxes as omiyage to bring back home but a lot of stores have freshly steamed versions too
atamii09
You’ll spot these “steamers” frequently in this street.

So with all these stores..which is the best?
My fave? Head straight to the store with the water wheel…
atamii08
We tried one from almost every store in this street [ok not every..but at least the ones with steamers..so about 6!? amongst 4 of us] and this was the BEST. We all took a box home XD
Details: 桜井商店 〒413-0011静岡県熱海市田原本町6-4 [they are shut on wednesdays!!]

How to get here:
You can drive [there is parking available]
Or You can take the train
You can take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo [about 50mins]
and the much cheaper option would be to take the regular Tokaido line from Tokyo [about 2hours]
