Saitama Chichibu: Nakamise Waraji Katsudon

As part of its tourism campaign, Seibu Group Railways has been promoting a new local delight in Chichibu (in Saitama, about 90mins by car from Tokyo)
Its waraji katsudon.

The ad says
Utsunomiya’s Gyoza
Kagawa’s Udon
Chichibu’s waraji katsudon

I was in Chichibu for a night matsuri [festival] a while ago and decided to try it out.
This is the store i went to.

What we had

Waraji is the flat japanese slippers made out of grass. [guess the flat fried katsu looks like it hence the name?]

Its immersed in this sweet slightly sour sauce as well, reminiscent of the sauce for katsuaage.
I really liked it xD~

The shop also sells its own pickles and miso which they used in the dishes you can eat there. Makes a great souvenir.

The store is in the alley attached to the station and you can see this giant “model” waraji katsudon outside of it.

They do bentos (lunchboxes) for takeaway as well!
